What's a business strategy?

In case there’s any doubt, a strategy is a master-plan which ensures that everyone in a business understands the vision, general direction and key milestones, and defines some of the ideas which will help achieve the business goals.

I’m not a fan of a regimented business plan, for a variety of reasons, but I’m extremely keen on a strategy.

What are the key steps to an effective small business strategy?

It's important to understand that a strategy is loose in nature. This ensure that you don't hold yourself to unreasonable or unachievable goals through perfectionism.

1. Define the outcome

In business coaching, we can spend a number of sessions on the outcome. This is because people rarely know why they've chosen what they believe they'd like, so we'll look at who you are, how you work best and what you want your life to be like.

We'll look at the business and organisational goals too, such as what values will the business have.

We should end up with a clear view on how we know that we've arrived at a success point.

2. Reverse engineer success

I always start a business strategy by imagining we've achieved success and looking back at how it was achieved.

There are a variety of questions to answer, including where the business might lack expertise, such as leadership skills, marketing or sales. This structured exercise allows us to answer these more effectively.

If required, we can incorporate some more general business coaching, leadership coaching or marketing coaching to plug some of these gaps.

3. Move forward from now toward this vision of a successful business

We then look at action steps that we could take toward the various points generated in the reverse engineering stage.

4. Evaluate all strategies against reality and achievement of success

Once we have a rough set of steps in the master plan, we can be more specific about each steps and build the strategy, considering the requirements from the different functions in your business (such as management, marketing, sales, distribution, HR, financial & cashflow).

5. Select business strategy and communicate it to the team

Of the possible strategies, you can choose one that you believe best suits the business and be as clear as possible about what is required by the various members of your team (if you have a team).

Resistance and procrastination are the killers of progress, and your strategy should be to reach the outcome you desire, however you get there. I'm here as a strategic coach to support you with that important task.

My role is to help increase your awareness using questioning and curiosity

You will be aware of some challenges to tackle, but some won't be immediately obviously so I can help you avoid mistakes before they happen.

Who am I?​

I'm Phil Drinkwater, a leading business strategy coach who supports clients in defining their business outcomes and finding an effective path forward.

As a Certified Coach, my interest lies in business coaching to ensure you are clear on the destination, and have considered all aspects of the direction you'll need to travel in to arrive there.

This will lead to a highly effective business strategy, regardless of whether you're a small business looking to grow, or an entrepreneur just getting started.

I’ve run my own successful online small business with up to 20 employees for 22 years

I started this business from nothing and navigated the challenges and difficulties to my own success. I can use my experience and mistakes to help you become more effective with your strategy.

I'm also psychology trained

I'm aware that our needs, thoughts and emotions determine whether we succeed or fail, and how we can change these to produce a more success-oriented mindset.

How will we begin the coaching process?

What will happen in our Free Discovery Session?

In our first business strategy coaching session, I'll ask you about the goal or outcome you're looking to achieve and gain an idea of how clear you are with that. At this point, we may break into life coaching to ensure that your destination meets your life goals too.

We'll also look at a few challenges you may experience. I should be able to tell you if I can help you.

If you're nervous, I'm incredibly kind

Some people are nervous, some aren't. Either way, I'll treat you with respect and, within that hour, you'll become comfortable. However, if you'd prefer a more gentle way to start coaching, we can do that.

All coaching is done online to keep costs accessible to all

How will we continue?

Pricing for one to one coaching services, and discounted packages

Single sessions for business owners and entrepreneurs are £189 - with a 15% discount in your first year of business. Single sessions for executives are £300. Discounted packages are available.

In coaching, we'll focus on designing an effective strategy that will lead you to the outcome that we've discussed and clarified

We'll ensure that all of the key personal and professional development points are discussed, as well as how the plan comes together as a project.

We'll meet every 1 to 2 weeks, usually

I suggest we meet every week or two, depending on schedules. This allows for the plans to be formulated in a reasonable amount of time.
